WHY?

Have you e been asked ever been asked why? I have been asked why hundreds of times and I have asked why hundreds of times. It is an important questions. It cuts right through any particular action and gets right down to the reasoning. Let me say this another way, it goes beyond behavior and straight to the heart.

This is an important question in child rearing. When my kids used to ask the question why, I would usually respond, "because I said so." This is the WORST response. Remember, the question deals with the heart. Because I said so offers no heart direction. When a child asks, "Why should I take a bath", I now offer a reason because I am offering heart direction. My response may be: you kinda smell and a bath will take care of that, your hair is greasy and a bath will take care of that, or a bath may help you relax. Perhaps a rebellious heart needs to be addressed and that can be determined by the tone and context surround the question "Why?"

As you can see, it is an important question. It is a heart question! I often use the question why when speaking with people. Why did you choose that particular path? While visiting other churches I asked, "why" a lot. There is reasoning behind every action.

I enjoy asking why when it when it comes to learning, but I hate asking why when someone has made a mistake. Why did you throw that baseball in the house? Why did you choose that action/behavior? Why did you sin in that way? Again, this question cute right to the heart of the matter, and sometimes people are not ready to answer. Often times people do not want to answer that question. Oftentimes, they may not even know the answer. It's a hard question!

But I hate it the most when I must ask myself why? Why am I acting this way? Why am I thinking this way? Why? Even though it is often a hard question to ask, it is an essential one. One that can lead to growth, repentance, healing and instruction.

Perhaps you need to ask yourself why. Why? It may be surprising what you find in your own heart.
